The Cretan identity has been significantly based on the lives and characters of the remote region of Sfakia. Were the rocks molded by humans or vice versa? Lets find out on our visit to the abandoned village of Aradena and during our hike under the shade of the pine forest on the southern cliffs of the White Mountains, gaining access to panoramic views.
Agios Ioannis village is situated a few kilometres away from Aradena and it is one of the smallest villages of Sfakia, populated by a mere 15 people. The altitude of 800m is an ideal destination for naturalists and hikers because a large network of trails surrounds the place.
Aradena’s settlement is an open-air museum of Sfakian folk architecture: internal dividing arches, staircases, little yards, houses, all stonebuilt. The place is full of almond and walnut trees as well as prickly pears.
